Many of us make New Year’s resolutions to be more active in the new year.  This common resolution can be very beneficial to those with dementia.  An active lifestyle promotes better physical and mental health and can improve the quality of life for those in each stage of dementia.  This may not mean going to the gym, running, or cycling as some may think.  Any activity that increases one’s heart rate such as walking, gardening, dancing or even video games can help.  Benefits of staying active include improving heart health, reducing the risk of cancer, stroke and type 2 diabetes, improving strength and flexibility to maintain independence longer, improve memory and possibly slow mental decline, improves balance to reduce the risk of falls, improves self confidence, and improves moods.  Always check with a medical professional before beginning any activity.  Some activities to consider are gardening, dance, seated exercises, swimming or water resistance, Tai Chi, and walking.
