According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) lack of regular physical activity is a leading cause of the reduction of stamina and strength in those over 65 years of age. The lack of activity is also directly link to increases in a number of major health issues. The lack of physical activity is common and statistically increases with age. The CDC reports that by the age of 75 33% of men and 50% of women do not engage in any form of physical activity. Something the grandchildren probably due on a regular basis may be a simple way to get some activity for seniors. What is it you ask? How about video games! Yes, video games! The current version of video game consoles play games which are very realistic and most provide some level of physical interaction. Most of the consoles have games that are specifically created to encourage interaction with games focused on yoga, bowling, golf, skiing, tennis, cycling, and more. The games often allow the user to physically participate at levels comfortable to the user. The realistic designs and interactive nature of the games can provide adrenaline rushes similar to the real activity, yet in a much safer environment. If you or a loved one are looking to increase your physical activity, ask a family member, friend or caregiver to show you some of the video games and give them a try!
