This weekend for most of us is a three day weekend which has become known to many as the unofficial start to summer. Many families will celebrate the long weekend with outdoor events and gatherings. Monday is a national holiday now called Memorial Day, but did you know that it began as Decoration Day in 1868 following the American Civil War. Decoration Day was created to honor all soldiers who died during the Civil War by ensuring a day when their graves would be decorated. Following each of the World Wars many people began calling it Memorial Day, but Decoration Day didn’t officially became Memorial Day until 1967. We should all take the time this weekend to thank a veteran and to decorate the graves of those who have fought for our freedom.
