The first year of a trial program to provide in-home care for certain Medicare recipients has shown great promise.  The program, called the Independence at Home Demonstration, has 17 practices across the United States performing services for chronically ill in their homes versus in a clinical setting.  The first year results showed a savings of over $25 million and a drastic improvement in care.  Out of the 17 participating practices, all of them improved quality in at least 3 of the 6 quality measures and 4 of the practices improved quality in all 6 quality measures.  The combination of cost savings and the improvement of care shows the importance of in-home care in the healthcare system.
